Signs your AC needs repair

Many homeowners wait until the air conditioner quits completely, usually on the hottest afternoon of the year. Catching the warning signs early is cheaper and saves you a sweaty wait for a fix.

If any of these sound familiar, don’t wait. A small problem left running often becomes an expensive one.

Technician repairing an air conditioner

How a Drake air conditioner repair works

Our technicians work on all makes and models of central air conditioners, heat pumps and mini-splits.

The technician who finds the problem is the one who explains it. There’s no sales team and no pressure. You get a clear price before any work starts, and our labor is backed by a one-year warranty.

Common AC problems we fix in the Treasure Valley

  • Refrigerant leaks. Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons an AC runs but doesn’t cool. The leak has to be found, repaired and the system recharged by a certified technician.
  • Frozen evaporator coils. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can ice over the indoor coil, stopping the cooling and causing water damage as it melts.
  • Clogged condensate drain lines. Dust from our dry climate clogs drain lines faster than most people expect, leading to leaks and mold.
  • Electrical failures. Capacitors, contactors and circuit boards wear out, especially after several hot summers.
  • Dirty filters and coils. They choke airflow and make the system work harder and fail sooner.
  • Damaged refrigerant lines. We repair and replace line sets, cleaning and brazing new lines under a nitrogen purge and pulling a deep vacuum so the system lasts.

Refrigerant leaks and older R-22 systems

An air conditioner is a closed system: if it’s low on refrigerant, there’s a leak. Topping it off without fixing the leak just means paying for refrigerant again next summer, so we find and repair the source first.

Older systems often use R-22, which has been phased out and is expensive to buy. If your AC uses R-22 and has a significant leak, we’ll compare the cost of the repair with replacing the system, and let you decide.

This is the second time Bryce has done repairs on my AC. He is so kind & knowledgeable and is thorough in explaining the issue and how it is being fixed. AC units are too expensive to replace & I appreciate that Bryce found other solutions.

Common questions

Have a question that isn’t here? Call us any time at (208) 362-6200.

How much does AC repair cost?

It depends on what’s wrong. A failed capacitor or a clogged drain line is a much smaller job than a refrigerant leak or a compressor. Your technician diagnoses the problem first and gives you a clear price before any work starts.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are a dirty filter, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit. Check the filter and make sure the outdoor unit is running. If it still isn’t cooling, call us. More on why your AC isn’t blowing cold air.

Why is my AC leaking water?

Usually a clogged condensate drain line, a frozen evaporator coil that’s thawing, or a cracked drain pan. Turn the system off to limit water damage and give us a call. More on AC leaks.

Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

If your AC is fairly young and the repair is reasonable, repair it. If it’s older, uses the phased-out R-22 refrigerant, needs repairs every summer, or the repair costs a large share of a new system, replacing it is often the better value. Your technician will show you both options. New cooling equipment comes with our One-Year Buy-Back Guarantee.
