Is it time to replace your air conditioner?

Air conditioners usually tell you before they give out. If yours needs a repair every summer, struggles on hot afternoons, or still runs on the old R-22 refrigerant, a new system may cost less over the next few years than keeping the old one going.

Your technician will give you an honest answer. If a repair makes more sense, we’ll say so.

How a Drake air conditioner installation works

As a Comfortmaker Elite dealer, we install efficient, dependable equipment and service all major brands.

We size the new system to your home rather than just matching the old one. We look at your square footage, insulation, windows and sun exposure, check your ductwork and electrical, and make sure the outdoor condensing unit and the indoor evaporator coil are a matched pair, so the system cools evenly and runs efficiently.

You’ll see your options side by side with a clear price for each: central air conditioners, heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. The person explaining them is a technician, not a salesperson.

Central air, heat pump or ductless mini-split?

  • Central air conditioners use your existing furnace and ductwork to cool the whole house. They’re the usual choice for homes that already have ducts.
  • Heat pumps cool like an air conditioner and also heat in spring and fall, and can be paired with your gas furnace for the coldest days. More about heat pumps.
  • Ductless mini-splits cool and heat individual rooms without ductwork: additions, bonus rooms, garages and older homes. More about ductless mini-splits.

Condensing units, evaporator coils and ductwork

An air conditioner is two halves that have to match: the outdoor condensing unit and the indoor evaporator coil that sits on your furnace. When one fails on an older system, replacing just that half often means a mismatched system that cools poorly and wears out sooner, so we’ll tell you honestly whether a single part or a matched system makes more sense.

We also handle the pieces around the equipment: new or modified ductwork, refrigerant lines, electrical, condensate drains and smart or Wi-Fi thermostats.

We had an excellent experience with Drake Mechanical. We needed a wine cellar AC split system repaired and they were able to help us out (apparently this requires a specialist). We appreciate their timely and professional repair.

This is the second time Bryce has done repairs on my AC. He is so kind & knowledgeable and is thorough in explaining the issue and how it is being fixed. AC units are too expensive to replace & I appreciate that Bryce found other solutions.

Common questions

Have a question that isn’t here? Call us any time at (208) 362-6200.

Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

If your AC is fairly young and the repair is reasonable, repair it. If it’s older, uses the phased-out R-22 refrigerant, needs repairs every summer, or the repair costs a large share of a new system, replacing it is often the better value. Your technician will show you both options. New cooling equipment comes with our One-Year Buy-Back Guarantee.

What size air conditioner do I need?

It depends on your home, not just on the size of the old unit. We look at square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure and your ductwork. An oversized AC cools in short bursts and leaves the house clammy; an undersized one runs all afternoon and still can’t keep up.

Can you add central air to my home?

Usually, yes. If your home has a furnace with ductwork, we can add a central air conditioner or a heat pump that uses the same ducts. If there’s no ductwork, a ductless mini-split cools (and heats) without tearing into walls.

Should I get a heat pump instead of an air conditioner?

A heat pump cools like an air conditioner in summer and also heats in spring and fall, and it can be paired with your gas furnace for the coldest days. It’s worth considering whenever you replace an AC. We’ll compare both for your home.

What is the One-Year Buy-Back Guarantee?

If you’re not 100% satisfied with your new heating or cooling equipment in the first year, we’ll buy it back. Ask your technician for the details when you choose your new system.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Residential customers can finance new equipment and larger repairs through Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval. See our financing options for current plans.
