What is a frost-free outdoor faucet?
A frost-free hose bibb has a long body that reaches through the wall, so the valve that actually shuts off the water sits inside the heated house. When you turn it off, the water in the outdoor part drains out, so there’s nothing left to freeze. Yard hydrants work the same way, with the valve buried below the frost line.
How do I keep my outdoor faucets from freezing?
Disconnect hoses before the first freeze. A hose left on a frost-free faucet traps water inside it and can burst it. On older, non-frost-free faucets, shut off the inside valve that feeds them, open the outdoor faucet to drain it, and add an insulated cover. Replacing old faucets with frost-free ones is the lasting fix.
How do I know if my outdoor faucet burst over the winter?
The first time you turn it on in spring, check inside the house too: water in the crawl space or basement, a damp wall behind the faucet, or a faucet that sprays from the wall side instead of the spout all point to a split pipe. Shut the faucet off and call us.
