Hosting for the Holidays: Plumbing Fixtures Worth Upgrading Before Company Arrives

Right around the first week of November, most households start looking at their homes through a guest’s eyes. The good towels come out, the guest room gets cleared of whatever has been stored there since spring, and somebody finally notices that the bathroom faucet has been dripping since August. Holiday company has a way of exposing every small thing you have learned to live with, and plumbing fixtures are near the top of that list.

The good news is that fixtures are one of the easier parts of a home to upgrade. A new faucet or toilet can be installed in a single visit, and the difference shows up in a room guests will actually use and notice. If you are expecting a full house for Thanksgiving or the holidays, late October is the right time to take a walk through the house and decide what is worth fixing before the calendar fills up.

Start With the Guest Bathroom

The bathroom your guests use is the one that gets judged, and it is also the one that tends to get ignored by the people who live there. Run the faucet and look closely. A slow drip, a handle that wobbles, or a spout crusted in white mineral scale all read as neglect, even in an otherwise spotless room. Treasure Valley water is hard enough that scale builds up around aerators and fixture bases faster than most people expect, and once it has worked into the finish, scrubbing rarely brings the faucet back. A new bathroom faucet solves the look and the function at once.

The toilet deserves the same attention. A weak flush or a toilet that runs after every use is the kind of thing a household adapts to without noticing, but a guest will notice it immediately. If yours has needed the jiggle-the-handle trick for months, a new toilet is a practical upgrade, and modern models flush more effectively on a fraction of the water older units use.

The Kitchen Takes the Most Abuse

If you are cooking for a crowd, the kitchen sink is about to see more use in a week than it normally does in a month. Stacks of pans, big pots to fill, a constant stream of hand washing, and a lot of scraping and rinsing all land on one faucet and one drain. A kitchen faucet with a spray head that has lost its pressure, a swivel that leaks at the base, or a cartridge that no longer shuts off cleanly will be frustrating on an ordinary Tuesday and miserable on the day you are juggling a turkey.

A pull-down sprayer makes a real difference for big holiday cleanup, and so does a faucet with enough clearance to fill your largest stockpot without a struggle. If your kitchen sink itself is chipped, stained, or too shallow for the way you cook, this is also a good moment to think about replacing the whole setup rather than just the faucet.

Don’t Forget the Shower

Guests staying overnight means showers, and a shower that takes ten minutes to get warm or shifts between scalding and cold when someone flushes elsewhere in the house is a poor welcome. Worn cartridges and tired valves are usually the cause, and replacing a shower or tub faucet is a more modest project than most people assume. While you are at it, a quick test of how long your water heater can keep up with back-to-back showers will tell you whether a house full of people is going to run it dry. We have an offer this October for $149.99 off a new water heater installation if that test turns up bad news.

Fix It Before the Rush

Plumbers get busy in the weeks before Thanksgiving, as everyone with a looming deadline calls at once. Getting fixtures sorted now means you can schedule on your own terms, pick the finishes you actually like, and spend the week before the holiday cooking instead of waiting for a tech. You can browse our full range of plumbing fixtures or have a technician look over the whole house and tell you which items are worth replacing and which can wait another year.

Drake has been serving Treasure Valley homes for five generations, and we know how much a handful of small, well-chosen updates can change a house before guests arrive. Give us a call at (208) 362-6200 or request service online to get on the schedule. Fast. Friendly. Fixed. Just Drake it.
