Is a tankless water heater right for you?
A tankless water heater heats water only when you turn on a tap, so there’s no tank to run out during back-to-back showers and no standby heat loss. It takes up a fraction of the space and typically lasts longer than a tank. It costs more up front, and it has to be sized for how much hot water your home uses at once.
If your tank water heater is near the end of its life, it’s a good time to compare the two. See water heater replacement for tank, hybrid and heat pump options.
How a Drake tankless installation works
We size the unit to the fixtures your family runs at the same time, then check what the installation needs: the gas line size or electrical capacity, venting, water connections and shut-off valves. Going from a tank to tankless often means a larger gas line and new venting, and we tell you that up front.

Tankless water heater maintenance and descaling
Mineral scale is what wears a tankless water heater out, and Treasure Valley water is hard. Scale coats the heat exchanger, lowers efficiency and is the most common reason for service calls. Once a year, our plumbers flush and descale the unit, clean the inlet filter and check the venting and error history, for every make and model.
A water softener cuts scale dramatically and helps a tankless unit last longer; we often install the two together.
Tankless repair
Lukewarm water, temperature swings, an error code on the display or a unit that won’t fire are usually fixable: often scale, a dirty filter, a venting problem or a failed sensor or igniter. Our plumbers repair tankless water heaters of all major brands and explain whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense. See water heater repair.

Josh and his crew (Oscar and Levi) came out to install my new water heater and repipe my entire home. It was 3 days and they did a fantastic job! I will add that my drywall guy came to make some repairs and he also said they did a fantastic job! Thank you again to the entire team!

We were having low water pressure from our kitchen faucet and tried changing the cartridge and the wand and a few other things with no success. Thomas Conley came out and fixed problem within an hour. Now our water pressure is back to normal and we are extremely happy. Thomas is very professional and knowledgeable. Very happy with Drake Mechanical

Common questions
Have a question that isn’t here? Call us any time at (208) 362-6200.
How often does a tankless water heater need to be descaled?
Once a year for most Treasure Valley homes. Hard water leaves mineral scale inside the heat exchanger, which cuts efficiency and is the most common reason tankless units need repairs. A descaling flush and a cleaning of the inlet filter keep it running properly.
Can I switch from a tank water heater to tankless?
Usually, yes. A gas tankless water heater often needs a larger gas line and new venting, and an electric one needs enough electrical capacity. A Drake plumber checks your gas or electric supply, venting and water lines first and tells you exactly what the switch involves before any work starts.
Does a tankless water heater really never run out of hot water?
It heats water as it flows, so it won’t run out the way a tank does. It does have a limit on how much hot water it can deliver at once, so a unit sized too small can struggle with several showers and appliances at the same time. That’s why we size it to your household.
Should I get a gas or electric tankless water heater?
Natural gas and propane units deliver more hot water at once and suit most whole-house installations. Electric tankless units are simpler to install where there’s no gas, but a whole-house electric unit needs a lot of electrical capacity. We’ll compare both for your home.
Should I get a tank or a tankless water heater?
A tank water heater costs less to install and works well for most homes. A tankless water heater heats water on demand, so you don’t run out during back-to-back showers, it takes up less space and typically lasts longer, but it costs more up front. We’ll compare both for your home and how your family uses hot water.
