Do heat pumps work in Boise winters?
Yes. Modern heat pumps keep heating efficiently well below freezing. On the coldest nights, most homes pair the heat pump with backup heat, either electric strips or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup, which takes over automatically. We’ll size and set up the system for Treasure Valley winters.
Why is my heat pump covered in ice?
A light frost in winter is normal; the heat pump melts it off with a defrost cycle. If the outdoor unit stays covered in ice, the defrost control, a sensor, low refrigerant, a failing fan or restricted airflow could be the cause. Turn the system to emergency heat if you have it and call us.
Why does my heat pump run all the time?
In very cold weather, a heat pump runs longer than a furnace would, and that’s normal. If it runs constantly in mild weather, can’t reach the set temperature, or your bill jumps, it may be low on refrigerant, have dirty coils or a clogged filter, or a failing part. We’ll diagnose it.
Should I get a heat pump instead of an air conditioner?
A heat pump cools like an air conditioner in summer and also heats in spring and fall, and it can be paired with your gas furnace for the coldest days. It’s worth considering whenever you replace an AC. We’ll compare both for your home.
