Signs your boiler needs repair

Boilers usually give warning before they fail: banging pipes, radiators that stay cold, pressure that won’t hold, or a leak around the boiler. Many older North Boise homes still heat with steam radiators, and those systems need someone who knows how they work.

How a Drake boiler repair works

Our technicians repair and service all boiler makes and models, from classic cast iron steam boilers to modern condensing boilers. We find the real cause, whether it’s a failed steam trap, a leak, a control or a burner problem, and fix it to restore heat and efficiency.

You get your options and a clear price before any work starts.

Steam boilers, radiators and steam traps

Steam heat needs specialized care. We repair and replace radiators, valves, steam coils and piping, and test and replace failed steam traps, the usual cause of banging water hammer and wasted steam. We service float and thermostatic, balanced pressure, liquid expansion and thermodynamic traps. Steam boilers also need water treatment: minerals left behind as water turns to steam cause scale that shortens the boiler’s life, so our service includes chemically treating the system.

Condensing and non-condensing boilers

When a replacement makes more sense than another repair, a high-efficiency condensing boiler converts over 90% of its fuel into heat. They’re compact, often wall-mounted, run on natural gas or propane, and are a great match for radiant floor heat. We size and vent them correctly. For traditional non-condensing boilers, we provide system balancing, flue inspection, part replacement and annual maintenance to get the most life out of them. Financing is available.

Needed a boiler serviced and had Drake Mechanical out before as I knew they serviced residential boilers. … Bryce the boiler tech was knowledgeable, friendly and professional and completed the service quickly and efficiently. They took the time to walk through everything they serviced and also adjusted the price from the original quote because some items were not required … Would highly recommend Drake for plumbing and mechanical service.

We recently hired Drake Mechanical to inspect and repair the radiant heat system in our shop. From the beginning, they were prompt and professional. They arrived when they said they would and took the time to explain what they were doing and why. Kevin and his assistant worked efficiently and clearly knew what they were doing. … It’s rare to find a company that combines technical skill with excellent customer service. We’d highly recommend.

Common questions

Have a question that isn’t here? Call us any time at (208) 362-6200.

Why do my radiators bang and knock?

In a steam system, banging is usually water hammer: condensed water trapped in a pipe that live steam slams into. A failed steam trap, pipes that have lost their slope, or a radiator that isn’t pitched toward its valve are common causes. We find and fix the source.

Why is one radiator cold?

On a hot water system, trapped air often keeps a radiator cold, and bleeding it may fix it. On a steam system, a stuck air vent, a failed trap or a radiator that’s pitched the wrong way are common causes. If it’s more than one radiator, the boiler or piping may need attention.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year, before the heating season. A yearly service checks the burner, controls, safety devices, venting and water treatment, catches leaks and worn parts early, and keeps the boiler efficient.

Should I replace my old boiler with a condensing boiler?

If your boiler is old, inefficient or needs costly repairs, a high-efficiency condensing boiler can be the most cost-effective choice. They’re compact, often wall-mounted, run on natural gas or propane, and work especially well with radiant floor heat. We’ll compare repair and replacement for your home.

What should I do if I smell gas or my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?

Get everyone out of the house right away, leave doors open behind you, and don’t switch lights or appliances on or off. From outside, call 911 and your gas company. Once it’s safe, call us and we’ll find and fix the cause.
