Signs your water heater needs repair

Water heaters usually warn you before they fail. Popping and rumbling mean sediment has built up in the tank; rusty water or a rotten-egg smell can point to a worn anode rod; a pilot that won’t stay lit points to a failing thermocouple or gas valve. Catching these early often means a simple repair instead of a flooded garage.

If water is leaking from the tank or the relief valve, turn the water heater off and call us right away.

How a Drake water heater repair works

Our plumbers repair all makes and models of gas and electric tank water heaters, tankless units, and hybrid and heat pump water heaters. Common repairs include thermocouples, igniters and gas valves, heating elements and thermostats, anode rods, relief valves, drain valves and sediment flushing.

The plumber who finds the problem is the one who explains it, with a clear price before any work starts. If your water heater is near the end of its life, you’ll hear that honestly too.

Tankless water heater repair and descaling

Tankless water heaters need a yearly descaling flush, especially with hard Treasure Valley water. Scale on the heat exchanger causes error codes, fluctuating temperatures and shut-offs. We repair and descale all major tankless brands. More about tankless water heaters.

Repair or replace your water heater?

A tank water heater typically lasts around 8 to 12 years. If yours is younger and the problem is a part, repairing it usually makes sense. If the tank itself is leaking, or it’s older and needs repairs, a new water heater is usually the better value. See water heater replacement.

Josh and his crew (Oscar and Levi) came out to install my new water heater and repipe my entire home. It was 3 days and they did a fantastic job! I will add that my drywall guy came to make some repairs and he also said they did a fantastic job! Thank you again to the entire team!

We were having low water pressure from our kitchen faucet and tried changing the cartridge and the wand and a few other things with no success. Thomas Conley came out and fixed problem within an hour. Now our water pressure is back to normal and we are extremely happy. Thomas is very professional and knowledgeable. Very happy with Drake Mechanical

Common questions

Have a question that isn’t here? Call us any time at (208) 362-6200.

Why don’t I have hot water?

On a gas water heater, the pilot may be out or the thermocouple or gas valve may have failed. On an electric one, a heating element or thermostat may have burned out, or the breaker may have tripped. Running out of hot water quickly often means sediment has built up in the tank. We repair all of these.

Why is my water heater leaking?

A drip from the temperature and pressure relief valve can mean the pressure or temperature is too high, which needs attention right away. Leaks from fittings and drain valves are usually repairable. Water coming from the tank itself usually means the tank has rusted through and the water heater needs replacing. Turn the water heater off and call us.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

If it’s fairly young and the problem is a part such as a thermostat, element, igniter or valve, repair it. If the tank is leaking, or the water heater is near the end of its life and needs repairs, replacing it usually makes more sense. Your plumber will show you both options and the price of each.

How often should a water heater be flushed?

Once a year for most homes. Flushing clears the sediment that builds up in the bottom of the tank, which makes water heaters noisy, less efficient and shorter-lived. Tankless water heaters need a yearly descaling flush too. The Drake Duck Club’s Plumbing and Whole House plans include a water heater flush and check.
